There's a few of us who want to do a recon mission up there. I have been told that you can do epic downwinders from Masset to the NE tip of Haida Gwaii.

I am hoping HaidaGwaiiSurfer can shed some light on wind directions, wind speed, and time of year to go.

I want to go in June or July.

It's too bad it costs so much to get up there, sort of takes the piss out of it when you can go to Maui (or?) for the same or less. But I too would like to try there some day, just need to tie it in some work trip somehow so it's not on my dime.
Don't forget to bring a towel!

Its called Sandspit because the locals have to spit sand out of their mouths when it blows really hard SE.

Hey guys. Yup, you can certainly kite here in Haida Gwaii - The Charlottes. Our winter prevailing wind is South East and you're looking at some gusty 30+ knot wind. Best launch spots are a sandy rivermouth on the east side of the island. Expect big waves and short period swell. The north beach is wicked for downwinders in a NW wind, but it can be somewhat milder at 15kt generally, so a big kite is essential if you want to stay upwind. There are tonnes of places to launch all over. Sandspit is another good spot because of the southeaster you can kite on the other side of the spit and have fairly flat water with the big winds. I've never done it, but I bet Grey Bay would be a cool spot. I have a small surf shop at www.northbeachsurfshop.com and if you drop by I can give you some more beta on the places to go in each wind direction, places to stay and eat. I also shuttle vehicles for big downwinders. I've got some patch gear too if you run into the driftwood.
It is true that Hawaii Gwaii is a quick and easy (warm) kite fix. The beauty of up here is that you're relatively alone and if you take some time you can get to see some amazing scenery and culture. Come up for a week at least to get it all in, and have a good chance of scoring some wind and waves.
