Cadboro Bay for Kiteboarding?

Post by Engineering Kid »

Has anyone tried it there?

I've kited on flat water inland lakes a lot, but I'm still a bit nervous about heading out to cook street for my first session on the west coast. I don't want to end up floating to Port Angles.

I took a walk around the beach recently, and it looks like a good spot, clam but still opened enough for wind and a good launch beach. There's the yacht club off to the west side of the harbour and several boats moored on that side but otherwise looks like a good spot.

I didn't see it listed in the location wiki. Has anyone ever kited there or should I just stick to the Saanich inlet or just try cook street?

yeah - but its either onshore wind or gusty. Onshore at low tide with a big beach might work OK, but don't get lofted onto Kus' Pringle cat in the dinghy compound!

EDIT - I echo Kus' recommendation for Gordons. Steady sideshore wind, no reefs, a bay to catch you if all goes wrong - should be there is the wiki. Saanich Inlet is definitely a no-go too, Pat Bay might work rarely on a SW, but the only decent kite launch would be from the Reserve and that wouldn't be allowed. Go to Gordos!

it's not in the Wiki cuz even for windsurfing it's a bit of a nightmare, direction changes, very rarely steady, kids on the beach, crab pots, moored boats, nutso gusts usually. I have seen a steady onshore there a couple of times and considered "hey, why not?", but it is rare.

Would not launch @Cook first time in the ocean. It is the small beach, reef, kelp, current and lofting combo that provides for entertainment there...Give Gordon's a try, should be okay there on Saturday  (or maybe even tomorrow), go early, like @1-2, launch at Tugwell with a buddy
