I heard the road is in good shape - not much traffic to beat it up so far this year.

Well actually it's the heavy logging traffic that has been forcing them to maintain it. Road is always the best when logging is gangbusters.

it'll be interesting to see what happens with all this "new" traffic due to the Hwy 4 fire

Perhaps South Shore around Cowichan would be better, have not been that way for a while......

The Cameron Lake Bluff fire is diverting all traffic via the Youbou / NN turnoff route and that will make for some interesting traffic on the road. It is actually closed now for vehicle recovery:

To support essential goods transport, beginning Sunday, June 11, four piloted convoys specifically for commercial vehicles will be guided along the detour route, to and from Port Alberni. These scheduled convoys will occur daily until further notice.

The piloted daily departure times are as follows:

Westbound from Lake Cowichan: 5 am and 3 pm
Eastbound from Port Alberni: 10 am and 8pm
Commercial vehicles are restricted to legal weight limits (63,500 Kg) – no over-weight or over-size loads will be allowed on the detour.
Commercial vehicles will also be permitted to travel outside of these windows, however, there will be no pilot vehicles at those times. Other drivers will be placed behind the convoys because the priority is the movement of essential supplies, such as fuel and food.

The road is very good. Traffic has also calmed to normal flow now that Highway 4 is (partially) open. I had to laugh at the "toilets 400m ahead" sign just before the Nitinaht T intersection. Who wants to pee in a stinky, smelly, hot plastic cubicle when there is acres of forest around!
