Webcam issues

Yesterday I got some news that the webcams were creating "excessive usage" on my webhosting account at Lunarpages. They shut the site down without notice. They moved it to a temporary server and gave me 1 week to fix it. I guess 9 webcams uploading at 20-30sec intervals were creating a strain on their system. Not sure why anything is different now then a few months ago.

So for now some webcams are back but others I can't get to work for some reason: Pipers, IV, Willows, Cow. If anyone out there is a router expert let me know - for some reason FTP'ing has stopped at these sites and I can't ping the host (windisgood.com) from the router... I tried remotely rebooting the router with no luck.

Update for those who care: It seems that the issues were not related to bandwidth which is good news. That means the webcams can continue uploading like they are now. However, the webcam archive gallery (1 week of one minute images) were slowing down their server. Every time someone clicks on a gallery page the server has to make thumbnails for each of the images. This takes a lot of CPU resources. For now the webcam archive gallery has been turned off until we can find another solution.

FYI, just so you know how much bandwidth is being used by the webcams:

Jan 2008 128 GB
Feb 2008 141 GB
Mar 2008 152 GB
Apr 2008 176 GB
May 2008 162 GB
Jun 2008 102 GB

That is about 6GB per day! That's gigabytes. This is for the webcams only, add another 25GB per month for the rest of the website - forum, gallery etc. That's lots of data!

Thanks to Russian Dood for looking into a better, more efficient way to display the webcam archive gallery.

The webcam archive gallery is back. Thanks to RD for modifying it. The thumbnails shown are now the original images so each page does take a while to load. Each page shows one hour of images (60 images at 1 minute intervals) and is 3-4MB total. One day of images is 50-60MB. We'll see how this works.
